Derek was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts to Gary and Helen (Krzys) David. At a very young age, his family moved to Maine, where he developed a deep love for the outdoors that would remain with him throughout his life. As a young boy in Maine, his first job was delivering newspapers as a paperboy in his local neighborhood - an early sign of the strong work ethic and determination that would define him.
He spent countless days and nights riding bikes with friends, racing BMX bikes, and even racing motocross competitively for many years throughout the New England area. He was very successful with his racing and won many titles over the years. To the MX circuit he was known as "Dynamite Derek" and he had a school bus with his name on the side of it to prove it. The friendships and memories from those years stayed with him always.
After graduating from high school in 1989, unsure of the path to take, Derek began working at United Parcel Service. What started as uncertainty became a proud 35-year career. As a UPS driver, he became a familiar and friendly face along his route, known for his dedication, reliability, good sense of humor, and genuine kindness.
Derek found his greatest peace by the ocean, surrounded by family and friends, content to simply sit and watch the waves roll in. He cherished long weekends in New Hampshire at the lake with cousin Mike and family, where time seemed to slow down. In the winter, he loved snowboarding at Sugarloaf Mountain with Nicholas, embracing the cold air and the thrill of the slopes. He also loved riding his scooter alongside Nicholas and Jennifer, watching Star Wars and Jaws on repeat, lighting up birthday parties with fireworks, and puttering around the yard on his tractor. It was in these simple, meaningful moments that he felt most at home.
Derek and Jennifer's love story began the summer of his freshman year. A young love that grew into a lifetime partnership. They shared 38 years together and would have celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary on March 12th. Their marriage was built on deep love, laughter, loyalty and unwavering devotion.
Derek had a great sense for humor, a quick wit, and a natural charm that drew people in. He loved to make others laugh and had a way of lighting up a room with his presence. Above all, he was a proud and devoted father to Nicholas, and his 4 legged kids Enzo and Phoebe. His family was his greatest pride.
Derek (Mugsey) is survived by his loving wife, Jennifer (Goldie); his son, Nicholas (Little Bitey); his father, Gary David; his sister, Tracy Givens; his nieces, Jayme and Cali; and his nephews, Cody, Wade and Cooper.
He was preceded in death by his mother Helen David.
Derek's legacy is one of kindness, laughter, strength, and unconditional love. He will be remembered for his courageous spirit, steady presence, and the warmth he brought into the lives of everyone who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will continue to inspire all who loved him.
