She was born to Chester and Mary (Britton) Bubier in Greene on December 30, 1928, the eldest of twelve siblings. Evelyn grew up on the family farm, helping with chores such as tending the cows, cutting the hay, and looking after her brothers and sisters. As a young woman, Evelyn traveled to New York where she studied to be a beautician. After completing the course, Evelyn returned home to Maine where she found employment at local beauty salons such as Harper Method Shop and Peck’s Beauty Salon.
She married William H. Wagg of Bowdoin on June 24, 1955 and they made their home in Greene. They eventually settled on Main St. where they built an addition to the house, allowing Evelyn to open her own beauticians’ shop where she worked the remainder of her career.
She was a member of Androscoggin Grange #8, and in 2010, she and her sister, Deanie, were presented seals and certificates from the State and National Grange for achieving 65 years of continuous membership. Evelyn also volunteered countless hours at The Baptist Church of Greene, where she was a member for many years. She served in many capacities, most notably as a Sunday school teacher and deaconess, and more recently she was a member of the church prayer chain until her health made it impractical for her to continue.
Her husband enjoyed gardening, and she could often be found in the kitchen preserving the harvest, or sitting in the living room shelling peas, snapping beans, and visiting with her family. She loved to feed people, and anyone stopping by was sure to be offered a meal or a snack. She also kept busy with family, she was often in and out of her siblings’ homes helping with nieces and nephews, and raising her two daughters. Later, when she was blessed with grandchildren, she could always be counted on to lend a hand, and she always made time for them. Whether they needed a ride, wanted to come for a visit, or had an event they wanted her to attend, her grandchildren knew that all they had to do was ask and she would be there.
Evelyn is survived by her eldest daughter Karlene and her husband, Denis Perron, of Greene; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; siblings Deanie Creamer, June Prescott, Esther Randolph, Earle Bubier, Sr., Randy Bubier, and Judy Austin; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, William H. Wagg; daughter Gailene Waite; siblings Carl Bubier, Stanley Bubier, Sr., Inez Thompson, Rose Hanson, and Fred Bubier.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Odd Fellows’ for the love and care they gave to Evelyn over the last few years, and the kindness and attention shown to Evelyn and her loved ones during her final days. The family would also like to extend their gratitude to the amazing staff at Andwell Health Partners for their invaluable support and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Baptist Church of Greene or Andwell Health Partners.
Services will be held on April 25, 2026 at The Baptist Church of Greene, 102 Main St., Greene, ME. Visitation begins at 10:00am, and the funeral service will be at 11:00am with a luncheon to follow. A private graveside for the family will be held at a later time.
