

Geneva C. Hartford 1922 -2010 AUBURN - Geneva "Gin" C. Hartford, 87, of Lewiston, died January 31, at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, after a short illness. Gin was born in Lisbon, December 31, 1922, the tenth child of Elizabeth May and Harry Carville. She married Oscar M. Hartford on July 24, 1941. They lived in Lewiston their entire life and spent time at their chalet in Bryant Pond. They had three sons. Throughout her life, Gin was known for her wit, caring, and devotion to others. She was one who gave freely of herself, never expecting anything in return, knowing that her contribution would benefit a family member, person, organization, community, or her Country. Gin was often found serving several organizations and noteworthy causes. She sold War Bonds at local schools during World War II. She was a leader in Cub Scouts and Brownies. She was active in the Lewiston High School Band Booster Club where she organized several successful fund drives. She was a certified member of the National Ski Patrol and served on patrol at Lost Valley and Mt. Abrams and eventually became a ski instructor for youths and the elderly. Gin enjoyed outdoor activities to include fly-fishing, camping, hiking, white water canoeing, and snowmobiling. She loved watching the birds and other wildlife and always was excited to see a red cardinal. She was proud of her flower gardens and enjoyed tending to them, especially her Stargazer Lilies. She enjoyed canning all the vegetables from her husband's garden and knitting warm gifts for her family. She was a lifetime Red Sox fan. In Bryant Pond, she was a friend and supporter of the Woodstock Fire Department. She was also a member of the United Baptist Church of Lewiston. She is survived by her loving, caregiver husband of 68 years, two sons, Tom Hartford of Woodstock, Richard Hartford of Lewiston and her daughter in law, Susie Wilding Hartford of Litchfield. She is also survived by grandchildren, Lucas Hartford, Justin Hartford, Michael Hartford, Betsy Hartford, Gina Hartford, and Sadie Hartford; great grandchildren, Peter and Jack Hartford and Brady Marcus, her sisters; Ruth Berry, Dorothy Walker, Edna and her husband W. James Foote, and Florence and her husband Emerson Brewer. She was predeceased by her son Robert Hartford, five brothers; Willard, Linwood, Clarence, Lester, and Albert and two sisters; Gertrude Pillsbury and Eva Pillsbury. The family would like to extend a special thank you for the care Gin received from the doctors and staff at St. Mary's Hospital and the entire staff of the Hospice House. Their caring, dedication, understanding, and professionalism made her days comfortable and dignified while providing the family with encouragement. HARTFORD died in Auburn, January 31, 2010, Mrs. Geneva “Gin” C. Hartford age 87 years a resident of Lewiston. A Celebration of Life service honoring Geneva's life will be held FRIDAY 10:00AM at the Pinette & Lynch Funeral Home with Chaplain Kathleen O’Wrill presiding.
