

New Gloucester - George Linwood Stone, 81, of New Gloucester died March 30 at St. Marguerite d'Youville Pavilion. He was born in East Poland, ME on April 21, 1925 the son of Ralph W. and Josie A. Prescott Stone. A graduate of Edward Little High School in 1943. He joined the Army after graduation and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was discharged in 1985 after 42 year of service in the active military and reserves. He was employed by The New England Telephone Company for 30 years retiring in 1976. After retirement he worked for the State of Maine for 10 years as a park ranger at Popham Beach State Park and Range Pond State Park. He also worked as a sales manager for Long Distance Telephone Co. of Lewiston. He was a member of the United Baptist Church of Lewiston. He worked extensively with Boys and Cub Scouts of America, leading a canoe trip down the Allagash. He belonged to the Tyrian Lodge #73 A. F. & A. M., Life Member of The VFW Post #1603, Life Member of Telephone Pioneers, Past President of the Popham Beach Boat Owners Assoc. His volunteer activities included New Gloucester Board of Appeals, Red Cross Blood Drive, Sisters of Charity Life Line Installer. He enjoyed wood working, playing the piano, fishing, hunting, flying, square dancing and traveling. He was predeceased by his son Robert L. in 1989. Survivors include his wife, Virginia, of 59 years 10 months, two sons Gregory R. and wife Lise M. of Lewiston, George M. and wife Terri of Albion. Six Grandchildren and two Great grand children. STONE died in Lewiston, March 30, 2007, Mr. George L. Stone age 81 years a resident of New Gloucester. Memorial services honoring the life of George L. Stone will be held MONDAY 1:00PM at the Pinette & Lynch Funeral Home with Reverend Linda Gard presiding. Military honors will follow the service.
