Helen C. McGuire

Helen was born in Medford, MA on December 6, 1923, the younger of two children born to Clair V. Chesley, Sr, and Maryella (Rendall) Chesley. She was raised and educated in Hanover, NH and Auburn, ME, having graduated from Edward Little High School in 1941. She also graduated from Pelletier’s Beauty School in 1944. She married Richard D. Attwood in 1946 and together they raised 4 sons. In 1980, she married Francis L. McGuire of Auburn, ME. She was a homemaker for much of her adult life. She became an avid bowler and golfer during her midlife, being a longtime participant in the Friday Bowling League, and a member of Summit Springs Golf Course. She was a volunteer at CMMC, having contributed more than 14,000 volunteer hours over a 20 year period. She also was a longtime member of the High Street Congregational Church, Auburn, ME.

Many of her happiest times in life found her knitting (100’s of pairs of mittens, hats and sweaters for family or Church fairs), or in her kitchen making cinnamon rolls for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by her three sons, R. Deane Attwood, Jr. and wife Susan of Windham, ME, Paul S. Attwood and wife Kathy, Minot, ME, and Craig P. Attwood, Vail, CO, 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She is also survived by step children Jeanne Hosmer and husband Donald, Cave Creek, AZ, Michael McGuire and wife Mary, Florence, MA, Coreen Robert and husband Normand, Minot, ME , Stephen McGuire and wife Jane, Auburn, ME and step son-in-law Peter G. Small, Lewiston, ME together with their children and grandchildren. She is also survived by her dedicated companion of 10 years, Philip R. Cyr. Helen was predeceased by her parents, her husbands, a brother, Clair V. Chesley, Jr, a son, Mark C. Attwood, and a stepdaughter, Donna Small.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff of Androscoggin Hospice Care for their devoted service during the final days of Helen’s life.

A Memorial service will be held on Thursday May 1st at 2:00PM at Pinette, Dillingham & Lynch Funeral Home. A graveside committal service will be held at a later date at Mt. Auburn Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers donations in Helen’s memory may be made to Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice 15 Strawberry Avenue Lewiston, ME 04240.
