A graduate of Bates College, Joan moved to Maine in 1969 for her freshman year and lived within five miles of the Bates campus for most of her adult life. She worked as a journalist, a travel agent, and most recently as a proofreader, where she made many friendships that lasted decades. An English major, she loved reading books.
