Richard G. Doucette, age 85, of Auburn, passed away on Tuesday, December 14, 2021. He was born in Van Buren, ME on January 9, 1936, the son of Lottie (Levesque) and Eddie Doucette. He graduated from Van Buren High School and joined the US Army in 1955.
He was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division and sent to Ft. Benning, GA where he was trained as an Intelligence Specialist. After being honorably discharged he returned to northern Maine where he attended Ft. Kent State Teachers College.
In the early 1960’s he relocated to the Lewiston / Auburn area where he was hired by the City of Lewiston as a teacher. He taught history, geography, and government at Jordan Junior High, Lewiston Junior High, and retired in 1997 from Lewiston High School. During the summers from 1961-1969 he was the head of the waterfront at Camp Androscoggin located in Wayne, ME. He enjoyed working at the camp and as a Registered Maine Guide would guide canoe trips down the Allagash. In 1969, he married Jane Cushman, an English teacher at Lewiston Junior High, and in 1971, gave birth to their daughter, Lynne.
As a government teacher, he was heavily involved in the Democratic Party and was elected as a delegate to attend the state convention for many years. He was also involved in the American Legion (Post #153) and was elected as the Americanism officer; promoting an understanding and appreciation of American government and the protection of the United States Flag. He was also involved in the development of the Lewiston / Auburn Veterans Memorial Park.
He is survived by his daughter, Lynne of Litchfield, sister, Jeanette of Lewiston, brother, Alphy of Van Buren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded by his wife, Jane, parents, Eddie and Lottie, his brothers, Fortunat, Norman, Vernon, and Wilfred, and his sisters Cecile, Pricilla, Albertine, and Lillian.
A private family graveside service will be held at Gracelawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Richard’s name to the American Legion – Legacy Scholarship Fund.
