Alzada M. Sawyer

Alzada was born in Readsboro, VT on July 13, 1941 the daughter of the late Harold and Barbara (Wheeler) Murdock. She attended Readsboro schools and graduated from Drury High School class of 1959. Alzada then entered nursing school in Boston, MA. Alzada returned to the Readsboro area and worked as an LPN in the operating room at North Adams Regional Hospital for many years until she retired to spend time with the love of her life, Houghton (Pete) Sawyer. She was an active member of The Readsboro First Baptist Church where she helped make and serve monthly meals for the elderly. Over the course of her life, she could often be found enjoying arts and crafts on her own as well as with several dear friends. For many years, she enjoyed winters in Florida with her husband and friends.

She is survived by her daughter Rebecca (Roberts) Goodson of South Carolina, brother Marlin Murdock of Texas, sisters Rosemarie Hodgdon of Massachusetts and Brenda Holland of Vermont, grandchildren William Goodson (SC), Naomi Goodson (SC), John Roberts, III (IN), Jeremiah Roberts (VT), a great grandson John Thomas Roberts (IN) and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Houghton Sawyer, Jr., son John Roberts, Jr., and brothers Allen and Richard Murdock.

A graveside service will be held at Sadawga Cemetery on June 20, 2026 at 11:00 am followed by a luncheon at Readsboro First Baptist Church.
