Anna "Sue" Darlington went home to Jesus on January 30, 2023 at age 93. Sue was born to James Glasgow Wallace and Nora Theresa Mach Wallace on November 21, 1929 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was blessed to grow up with her extended family through childhood. Sue was dedicated to her family by leaving a heritage of faith, perseverance, gentleness, and strength. Sue accepted her role as helpmate with dignity and honor to her husband of 33 years, Norman William Darlington. She was an exemplary wife, keeping the family foundation of peace during times of her husband's military-related absences and preserving continuity and security as best as she could for her children during times of relocation. In addition to managing the household, she sewed most of her family's clothing.
Sue joins her mother, Nora Wallace Cannon and father, James Glasgow Wallace, as well stepfather, William H. Cannon; her daughter, Christine Darlington; brother, James Donald Wallace; son, Richard William Darlington (living spouse Kathy Darlington) who are in Heaven. She is survived by her brother, David Andrew Wallace, husband of Marion Cannon Wallace; her children, Michael David Darlington, Debra Ann Darlington, James Patrick Darlington (spouse Charlene June), Patricia Marie Darlington-Bradley, and Benjamin Joseph Darlington.
Sue was rewarded with 11 grandchildren, including Aaron Darlington, Angela Darlington, Ryan James Bradley (spouse Gina), Nicholas James Darlington (spouse Stephanie), Lorraine Ann Darlington, James Matthew Darlington (spouse Halie), Patrick Angelo Darlington, Lindsey Marie Taylor (spouse Austin), Toni Michelle Darlington (spouse Adam), Christopher William Darlington and Ian Gray Darlington.
Sue was further blessed to be a great grandmother to five precious souls, Beckett Louis Darlington, Charlie Nicholas Darlington, Summer James Bradley, Elliott Grace Darlington, and Micah Alexander Darlington.
Sue enjoyed being a loyal member of Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church since 1975, when her husband retired from the USAF and relocated the family to Columbia from Delaware. Her participation as a member included singing in the choir as a soprano. At death, she was an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary. She served as President and Vice President of the Legion of Mary as well. She and her fellow members visited souls in prisons, hospitals and long care facilities. Sue was a dedicated Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion for Mass. The Sanctuary Lamp over the Tabernacle in Our Lady of the Hills church was generously donated in memory of her mother, Nora Theresa Wallace-Cannon.
Although Sue's primary vocation was to her family, she worked outside the home in several positions including a piano-organ store, a credit union and for a decade as an Administrative Assistant in the Math Department of the University of South Carolina from which she retired.
Her retirement allowed her to follow her hobbies and discover some of her gifts of creativity. She enjoyed drawing and painting classes, cross stitch, and tole painting. Through Clemson University Extension, she received her Accreditation of Master Gardener and served as a member and volunteer of the Lexington County Master Gardeners. Her neighbors can attest to the consensus that her yard was most loved and nurtured by her beautiful agile hands which resulted in bountiful blooms, both perennial and annual. Those same hands with which she guided, cared for, and nurtured her family.
Sue was a testament of the Proverbs 31 woman: "She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed.... A woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate."
