Bennie described himself as a Christian and a man born to be a husband, father and grandfather. He was born on August 26, 1945 to Claude Sox Powell and Kathryn Jeffcoat Powell in Lexington, SC. Bennie graduated from Lexington High School and married his high school sweetheart, Lee Corley in June 1966. The couple welcomed daughters, Lisa Dawn and Tracy Marie. They also had the privilege of raising their niece, Jamie Lee as their daughter.
Bennie’s lifelong love for baseball earned him an offer to play catcher for the New York Yankees right out of high school. However, due to the circumstances in 1963, he decided to enlist in the Army Reserves and serve his country. Bennie then worked for the US Government at Fort Jackson for 33 years until his retirement as a Training Aids Supervisor. His most important job in life was coaching his daughter Lisa’s softball teams.
Bennie’s hobbies were baseball, football, hunting, woodworking, drag racing and coaching many young men and women in baseball and football. He spent many a Saturday with family watching Gamecock football and baseball along with MLB and NFL games.
Bennie is survived by Lee Corley Powell, wife of 54 years; daughters, Lisa (Keith) Busbee, Tracy (Glen) Green and Jamie (Jared) Baker; grandson, Benjamin (Marissa) Busbee along with two great-grandchildren, Addison Faith and Lane Benjamin as well as his sister, Emily “Ann” Powell.
The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to all the doctors, nurses and other health care workers who provided care for him over the past years at Lexington Medical Center Extended Care Camilla Court.
The most important fact to know about Bennie was that there was nothing greater than his love for his Savior and family.
