Betty Jo Mathias Sox

Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 24, 2022 at Lexington Baptist Church, 308 East Main Street, Lexington, SC 29072 followed by interment in St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.

Betty Jo was born 27th of February 1931 in Lexington, SC to Maxcy and F. Tillman Mathias, Sr. She was born at home, which is now known as Four Oaks Farm and was the last remaining sibling. She graduated from Lexington High School, Class of 1949, and would always tell stories about “The 49ers.” She met the love of her life, James “Jim” Sox at a Valentine’s Day dance at the Legion Hut and celebrated 63 years of marriage until Jim’s passing in 2012. Betty Jo loved her family dearly. She was an avid seamstress, designing clothes and costumes for generations. She was an active member in her church, grew award winning ferns, a vocal fan at every sporting event her children and grandchildren participated in, and a die-hard Clemson fan in her “house divided.”

Betty Jo is survived by her daughters, Donna (Stan) Miller, Denise (Dennis) Kendrick; 4 grandchildren, Jarrell (Jennie) Smith, Joel Miller, Carrie (Jay) Henderson, and Devin (Kristi) Kendrick; 5 great-grandchildren, Maddie and Ethan Miller, Carter, Callie and Hannah Claire Kendrick; sister-in-law, Patricia Mathias and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, parents and five siblings, Catherine Parkman, Francis T. Mathias, Jr., Fred B. Mathias, Sr., Shirley Mathias, and Gene “Pete” Mathias.

The family would like to offer heartfelt appreciation for the love and care she was shown by the staff at Wellmore of Lexington. They also extend their deepest gratitude to her personal caregiver, Phyllis Wise, who loved and cared for her deeply.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Betty Jo Sox to Wellmore of Lexington’s Alzheimer’s Association.
