LEXINGTON – Mrs. Dorothy Smith Mathias, 88, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Agape Senior Community. Born May 5, 1923 in Perry, SC, she was the youngest and ninth child of the late Rufus and Lillie Starnes Smith. Mrs. Mathias was a graduate of Lexington High School and Columbia Business College. She taught high school in Kershaw County and later was employed by the USDA in the county ASCS office in Lexington. She also worked with her family at their greenhouse business at Four Oaks Farm. She was a member of Lexington Baptist Church.
Mrs. Mathias was the widow of the late Francis Tillman Mathias, Jr. She is survived by her two children, Francis Tillman Mathias, III (Beth) and Nedra Mathias Brown (Bill). Mama Dot is survived by four grandchildren, F. T. Mathias, IV and Ann Mathias Hilliard, Lori Brown and J. Mitchell Brown (Laurie). Her great-grandchildren are Amber and Caitlin Mathias, Victoria and Matthew Hilliard, Emma McCracken, Arden and Ellamae Brown.
