He was born and grew up on a dairy farm in Lansing Michigan, to his parents Lydia and August Vietzke. He was the middle of 3 boys, with an older brother, Warren, and a younger brother, Mark.
Working two jobs, Dwight put himself through college at Michigan State, graduating with a degree in Physics.
After college, he was drafted into the army where he was stationed in Europe for two years. Before he left for Europe, he met his wife-to-be, Marguerite, at a dancette in New Jersey. While he was away, he wrote to her almost every day, and even sent her an engagement ring by mail! She accepted and they have been married for 67 years, with two children and three grandchildren.
Dwight’s first job was with RCA in New Jersey. Not long after that, he started working for NCR (National Cash Register) as an electrical engineer and moved his wife and 2 young children to Dayton, Ohio. That position eventually got him transferred in 1975 to Columbia SC area where they have lived ever since.
Some of Dwight’s passions were reading, politics, exercise, and learning new things. He started taking piano lessons in his 40’s and taught himself how to quilt. His quilting allowed him to blend his engineering precision with his artistic side to create many beautiful heirloom quilts. He also loved his Sunday school class, Bible studies, and his church, First Baptist of Lexington.
Dwight is survived by his wife, Marguerite; son, Dwight Jr; daughter, Julie; son-in-law, Chip; brother, Mark; and grandchildren, Mack, Tristan, and Maddie.
A special thanks to the many people who have prayed, helped, and supported us throughout this time. And gratitude for the staffs at Lexington Agape Hospice house and Generations of Irmo who helped make Dwight’s and his family’s transition easier.
The family requests that donations to be made to: First Baptist Church of Lexington, SC in lieu of flowers.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday March 28, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Lexington.
