
CAYCE – Eleanor Godfrey Bruno, wife of Lucien “Red” V. Bruno Sr., died Wednesday, January 30, 2013 following a brief illness. Mrs. Bruno was born February 14, 1924 in Cheraw, S.C., the youngest of four daughters of Samuel Gillespie Godfrey and Lucille Burroughs Godfrey. She is a 1941 graduate of Conway High School. She attended Erskine College in 1941 and 1942. In 1943 she transferred to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and graduated in 1945.
As a language major she was recruited by the NSA to work in crypto graphics at Arlington Hall during WW II. She met Red Bruno while he was rotating through Chapel Hill during his Naval Officer’s training, and they married after the War. Former members of Trinity Episcopal Church in Columbia, Mr. and Mrs. Bruno were asked by Bishop Alfred Cole to help start a mission church on the other side of the Congaree River. In 1959 All Saints, Cayce was established.
She and her husband enjoyed world travels enhanced by her knowledge of history and genealogy. A longtime active member of many organizations and clubs, Mrs. Bruno’s associations included: the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, South Carolina; Past President and Regent of The Eleanor Laurens Pinckney Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; Past President of The Driftwood Garden Club of Columbia; Past President of Home and Garden Club of West Columbia, member of the Diocesan Episcopal Church Women’s Board for the Diocese of Upper South Carolina, The Saint Anne’s Guild of All Saints Episcopal Church and on the Board of York Place Episcopal Home for Children. She was a wonderful person and a loving support to her extended family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, two daughters: Eleanor B. Wilson (Conway) of Hickory N.C. and Elizabeth B .Eaton of Weston, MA, one son Lucien V. Bruno, Jr. (Carroll) of Columbia S.C. Six grandchildren: Thomas C. Wilson, Eleanor W. Ellender (Ryan), Lucien V. Bruno IV, Elizabeth S. Eaton, Paul T. Eaton II and James H. Eaton. One great grandchild: Thomas P. Ellender. Her sister: Adeline Pringle Merrill. She was predeceased by her son, James H. Bruno and sisters, Esther G. Dargan and Lucille G. Quattlebaum.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday February 16, 2013 at All Saints Episcopal Church, Cayce. A reception will follow in the church parish hall.
