Gerald Dean Zalewski, age 97, of Lexington, South Carolina, peacefully passed away surrounded by the deep love of family on July 15, 2023. Born in Paw Paw, Illinois, he was a son of the late Frank Zalewski and Gladys (Mittan) and stepfather, Ralph Potter.
Gerald was honored and proud to have served his country for three years during WWII in the United States Navy. Deployed to Okinawa, as part of the Pacific Fleet, he piloted soldiers in Swank Boat Landing Craft. His experience as a diesel mechanic on the ship served him well in his civil career in manufacturing and engineering at General Electric, where he helped with the development of the fluorescent light bulb. Raised on a farm, he had developed both a mechanical aptitude and ability to grow just about anything. He was often sought out for his green thumb advice and handy man know-how.
The word “retirement” held no meaning for our vibrant Dad. He was a doer and creator of businesses. He raised orchids, and is known for Birds and Blooms, where he raised and sold African Grey and Macaw parrots, alongside landscaping materials.
He developed a love for the ocean while in the Navy and built a summer home in Rhode Island. The “plant whisperer” had blueberries, vegetables, flowers, especially gladiolus, flourishing there. He loved the beach and all summer activities. Salt water ran through his veins. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, well into his 90’s. Often he invited friends and family to enjoy the bounty of his catch including fish, clams, crab, and venison.
Jerry’s generous heart extended to the community as well. He was a mentor for Lexington Calvery Chapel’s U-Turn for Christ program and raised funds for the Children’s Ministry in Belize and other charities. One could often find him busily making his favorite things - specialty bottle lights and crosses. If not there, he might be engrossed in a spy thriller or dancing to a catchy tune.
It was in Rhode Island at a dance where the handsome man dressed in his white military uniform met and charmed the love of his life. Her name was Mary. They married and had a family – the beginning of his legacy of love. The love of family is powerful and Dad learned its profound value, especially as he grew older. He enjoyed his family, was delighted in seeing them and being part of their world. He would often say, “My family is my treasure.”
Jerry was the loving dad of Jeffrey Zalewski (Sterling) and JoAnn Onorato (Vincent). He was the beloved grandpa Z of Jessica Davis (Michael), Allison McFarlin (Josh), Courtney Skaggs (Josh), the late Ryan Onorato, Jason Onorato (Demeka), Lee Capotosti (Cameron), and Simmons Capotosti.
Affectionately known as Great-Grandpa Z, he was delighted by all of his great grandchildren: Trace, Banks, Riggs Davis; Tate and Elizabeth McFarlin; Silas, Lindy and Evie Skaggs; Sky Onorato, Derek and Lexi Williams; and Ray Bridgeman. He also leaves many loving nieces and nephews.
Jerry is preceded by brothers, Virgil Zalewski, Roger and Fay Potter; and sister, Lois Ream (Potter).
Dad shared stories, imparted wisdom, worked hard, and loved deeply. He will be dearly missed. His philosophy of life lives on: “Take a deep breath and roll with it.” Farewell precious pop – till we meet again
A memorial service for Jerry will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at 12:00 pm.
