James Randolph Berry, Sr. (“Randy”) 74, of Lexington, South Carolina, passed away on April 8, 2026. Born on July 17, 1951, in West Columbia, South Carolina, Randy spent his life rooted in the people and places he loved most.
Randy is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Kim Berry; his daughter, Juliana, and her husband, Matt Palyok; his son, Randon, and his wife, Rachel Berry; and his grandchildren, William Billbrough, Julia Palyok, Natalie Berry, and Knox Berry. He is also survived by his brother, Steve Berry. Randy was predeceased by his parents, Eric and Gerry Berry.
Known to many as “Big Randy” and affectionately as “Big Daddy,” he was a proud member of the Brookland-Cayce High School Class of 1970 and a standout athlete who carried a love of sports throughout his life. He loved playing, watching, and coaching sports, with some of his favorite years spent coaching the Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School wrestling team. Thanks to Kim, he even wound up a Tiger fan, and they loved traveling to Clemson games together, including several infamous bowl trips.
Randy spent many years farming, later worked at the Savannah River Site, and finally retired from the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, where he was known for his strong work ethic and steady presence. An accomplished hunter and fisherman, he especially loved fishing on the Edisto River and shrimping along the South Carolina coast.
Randy was also a man of great faith, whose trust in God carried him through joys and hardships alike. That faith shaped the way he loved his family, treated others, and faced life’s many challenges with courage and hope.
Over nearly 48 years together, Randy and Kim shared a life full of adventures, making memories their family will treasure. Randy was a born storyteller and a wonderful conversationalist, someone who seemed to understand people on a deeper level. He overcame more health challenges than most could imagine, yet remained one of the most optimistic people anyone ever met – always glad to see you, ready with a hug, a smile, or a perfectly timed one-liner. Above all, everybody loved Big Daddy.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 17, at 3:00 p.m. at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home in Lexington. Additionally, to honor him, friends and family are invited to a celebration of life on May 16 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at 309 Golden Glow Lane in Lexington.
