James was a wonderful husband, father and friend to many. Throughout his life, he never met a stranger and he rarely slowed down. He was issued the first Certified South Carolina Well Driller License and was a member of the South Carolina Ground Water Association. He began his career as a well driller with Heater Well Company in North Carolina and South Carolina and ended his career with retirement from Sox Well and Pump Company in Lexington, South Carolina.
Throughout the years, he also provided assistance to hundreds of people by helping to repair wells, pumps and plumbing on weekends and evenings after his well drilling job. He continued to help community families and friends for another 20 years after retirement until the age of 85.
James loved entertaining everyone with his life stories and endless jokes. He loved singing, dancing and collecting antiques.
Surviving are his son James Allen Lutz (Rebecca) and daughter Judith "Judy" Cook (Ray) along with 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, all of which provided him with his greatest joy.
James was predeceased by his wife, Mary Ivey Lutz, his son, Charles William Lutz and his sister, Roberta Jeffcoat.
The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to staff at Lexington Extended Care and Pruitt Health for their tremendous outpouring of care and love provided to us all and a very special thank you to his many friends that continued love and support during his long journey.
A visitation will be held Friday, April 10, 2026 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home – Lexington Chapel, 503 North Lake Drive, Lexington, SC 29072.
