Lynda Carole was born on March 7, 1942 in Chester, SC to Warren Grier Lynn and Eva Revels Lynn. She was an adored only child and she has now been reunited with her mother and father in heaven. She was a 1960 graduate of Chester High School, attended Columbia College and graduated from the University of South Carolina. Lynda Carole and her family moved to Lexington, SC in 1966 and lived most of her life there and in Charleston, SC.
She was a talented artist and enjoyed painting. She loved watching golf, tennis, and her beloved Carolina Gamecocks. She knew so much about flowers and plants and loved working in her yard, but the love of her life was shagging.
The first time Lynda Carole went dancing was on a trip to Folly Beach to see her grandparents. She was twelve years old and the only way she could go dancing on that trip was for her mother and grandmother to go with her. At her Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Harry Driver announced “that is some heavy chaperoning”. She started going to the Teen Canteen in Chester the next year and then to Ocean Drive for the first time when she was fourteen. That led to a life-long love of dance. Lynda Carole was a member of several shag clubs and organizations including the Columbia Shag Club.
She was inducted into the South Carolina Shaggers Hall of Fame (now the Beach Shaggers National HOF in Ocean Drive) in 1991 at the Sand Flea Beach Club in Greenville, SC and was also inducted into the Living Legends of Ocean Drive in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Lynda Carole won numerous shag dance competitions at places like the Bunk Leach Mixed Doubles at Thirsty’s/Thirsty’s2 Beach Club in Greensboro, NC; the National Shag Dance competitions in Myrtle Beach, SC; the Grand National Dance Championships in Atlanta, GA; and many others along the way.
Lynda Carole taught shag lessons for years and was a master of the smooth style of shag. She rarely danced many of the shag “steps”; she just always brought her own brand of magic to the dance floor, making it seem effortless.
She formed an immense group of friends through shagging and they loved her all of her life, as did everyone she met.
She is survived by her two girls, Robyn Flynn Nestvogel (John) of Rock Hill, SC and Carole Flynn Roof of Daniel Island, SC; her three grandchildren, Grier Gough Hoelzer (Drew) of Rocky Point, NY; James Britton Gough, Jr. of Rock Hill; and Flynn Alexis Roof of Daniel Island, SC; and her three great-grandchildren, Eliza Lynn Hoelzer, Mary Ellison Hoelzer and Luke Andrew Hoelzer all of Rocky Point, NY. They were the joys of her life along with her many friends from high school, Lexington and the shag community.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2020 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, 503 North Lake Drive, Lexington, SC. The family will receive friends following the service. Please wear a mask due to Covid-19 safety protocols.
Memorials can be made in Lynda Carole’s name to the Hall of Fame Foundation, Post Office Box 4070, North Myrtle Beach, SC (an organization started in 1991 with donations and proceeds from a Shaggers HOF Induction weekend.
