Born in Greenville, SC, on July 29, 1941, Mary Lee was the daughter of the late Clement Legrand and Leola Elizabeth Gibson. While growing up, she spent her summers in Centenary, SC, with her aunts, uncles and cousins; these were some of the happiest memories of her life.
Mary Lee delighted in buying and selling antiques; she and David owned and operated stores in Odessa, TX, Sumter, SC (Ashwood), and McCormick, SC. They also ran a successful construction/home improvement business in Odessa. Her favorite job in the world, though, was being a mother.
She was very creative and enjoyed many hobbies such as sewing, crocheting, various crafts, decorating cakes, gardening, and collecting elephants. She loved and raised miniature schnauzers and was an avid fan of both Elvis Presley and Gone With the Wind. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution -- McCormick SC Chapter, and treasured being a member of a Red Hat Society. She and David also like to travel, and took many sight-seeing road trips.
Surviving are her husband, David; children Timna Crawford of Bowie, TX; Derrick (Amanda) Hylton of Huntsville, TX; Kandie Norred of Elgin, SC; Kathie (Wes) Hicks of Greenwood, SC; Damon Hylton of Pueblo, CO; Daniel (Abbagayle) Hylton of West Columbia, SC; step-children Beth (Rick) Gabovitz of Walnutport, PA; Davy Hylton of Freeman, VA; and Sandra [Suzie] (Don) Hendrix of Bowling, VA; a special niece Natalie (David) Boykin of Thousand Oaks, CA; 26 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; 5 cousins.
A celebration of life will be held at 4 pm Saturday, August 3, 2024 at New Heritage Church, 3109 Leapheart Rd., West Columbia, SC 29169. A private burial will take place at a later date in the family cemetery in Centenary, SC.
