
He was a founding member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Diane B. Miller (Art) of Forestville, New York, Donna L. Naymola (Stan) of Rolling Meadows, Illinois, and Robin T. Hutchinson of Springdale, South Carolina; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Charlotte, Charlene, Alisha, Michael, Kurt, and Kyler; 14 great grandchildren, Nicholas, Abby, Jason, Zoey, Colin, Skylar, Samuel, Carleigh, Cora, Alison, Kylie, Hunter and Jesse June.
He was predeceased by his wife, Leila Vermell Gillespie.
Robert (Bob) "Hutch" to his Navy buddies, was born in Columbia in 1931. He attended Saint Peter's Catholic School and University High School. He joined the US Navy in 1950, attended Boot Camp at Great Lakes, Illinois and served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired after 30 years as a "Master Chief" Petty Officer with the HS8 Helicopter Squadron.
Robert married Leila in 1952 in San Diego, California. Robert met Leila while on leave in Columbia. Their courtship was by mail. Robert was known as "Mr. Tomato Man" for his homegrown tomatoes. He also enjoyed telling his family stories of his youth in Columbia.
Services will be held on Tuesday, November 10, 2020. Visitation at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. Following at 1:00 p.m. will be a prayer service at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Burial at Woodridge Memorial Park.
