It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, William Donald Stewart, who departed this life on April 24th, 2025 at the age of 66. He was a man of quiet strength, unwavering loyalty, and boundless love for his family and friends. He was a son of the late Greta Eston Stewart and Martha Catherine Dutton Stewart. He was a 100% disabled Marine Veteran.
William Donald Stewart shared 39 years of life and love with his former spouse, Sonia Stewart, the devoted mother of his children. Together they built a family grounded in love, strength, and faith. He was the proud father of four children: Wesley David Stewart, William "Tyler" Stewart, Kayla (Charles) McMillon, and Amanda Stewart. His children were his pride and joy, and he poured his wisdom, humor, and unwavering love into their lives. His affection for animals was just as special, always showing a generous heart toward both Sophia and Bandit. Though he may no longer be with us in person, he will forever live on in our hearts.
He was also a cherished grandfather to William "Tyler" Stewart, Braiden Stewart (Doyle), Ainsley Stewart (Rogers), and Brayleigh Stewart. His grandchildren brought him great joy, and he delighted in their laughter, accomplishments, and milestones.
William is also survived by his loving siblings: brothers, Danny Stewart (Denise and Mark) and Michael “Tony” Stewart (Brittany and Christopher), all of Lexington, SC; and sisters, Rose Marie Scheibler (John and Cathy) of Lexington, SC, Susan Catherine Roberson Stewart (Mallary, Preston, and Waverlee) of West Columbia, SC, and Mattie Phillips (Brett Phillips) of Columbia, SC. He also held a deep connection with his Darlington and Hartsville family—Rhonda, Jessica, Katie, Erica, and Rachel—each of whom held a special place in his heart.
William will always be remembered for his kind spirit, and the way he made others feel seen and valued during family celebrations at Ryans or Christmas Eve. Whether he was lending a helping hand, sharing a story, or cracking a joke to make someone smile, he left an impression of warmth and sincerity on everyone he met.
One of his greatest joys in life was spending time with his family and cheering on his favorite team. A true fan of Carolina football, he loved nothing more than watching the South Carolina Gamecocks take the field. Game days brought him happiness, pride, and connection with those around him. Known by many as “Papa Gamecock,” he wore that title with pride.
As we gather to celebrate his life, we hold onto the truth of God’s word from 2 Timothy 4:7-8, a verse that so perfectly reflects his journey: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith..." We find peace knowing he has received his crown of righteousness and rests in eternal glory.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and faith that will continue to live on in his children, and in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
Rest easy, Daddy. We love you forever and always — and we know you’ll be watching every Gamecock game from above. Semper Fi.
An inurnment graveside service for William will be held Friday, May 9, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Olympia Cemetery, Columbia, SC.
