Elvin was born near Gazette, MO on February 2, 1924, to Homer and Luella Clithero Maxwell. He attended Vandalia High School and served in the military in World War II. He married Patsy Sue Brown on April 23, 1949, who preceded him in death August 25, 2015 after 66 years of marriage. He was employed by Harbison-Walker Brick Refractories until his retirement in 1989 and was a member of First Baptist Church in Vandalia. He enjoyed gardening but found joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Claude, Lloyd, Ernest and Verle and two infant sisters.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in law, Linda and Larry Jones; grandchildren Ken (Sheryl) and Doug (Gina) Jones and Beth (Ted) Hopkins; great-grandchildren Rylie, Skyler, Grady, Logan, Zoe and Olivia Jones and Thomas and Emma Hopkins; several nieces and nephews.
A public graveside service will be held Monday, December 31, 2018 at the Vandalia Cemetery at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Vandalia Cemetery Association or St. Luke’s Hospice House, Kansas City, MO.
