Steve was born in Kansas City, Missouri on July 18, 1950, to Mary (Cleeton) and Kenneth May. Steve grew up in Gladstone, MO with his many brothers and sisters. He graduated from Oak Park High School in 1968. Steve later went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education with a Master’s of Educational Administration from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO. He was the first in his family to attend college.
Steve met his wife, Kathleen “Kathie” Ramey, at NWMSU in 1968. He knew on their first date that he would later marry his “angel wife.” She made him wait four years. They were married on May 27, 1972, at Budd Park Christian Church in Kansas City, MO. Together they had Miranda and Kaleb, whom they loved very much. He was involved in all aspects of his children’s lives from coaching sports teams, church activities, and teaching them many life skills.
Steve spent many years working in middle and high schools as a shop teacher, something that is now practically a lost art. He taught at North Kansas City High School, Liberty High School and New Mark Middle School. After many years of teaching, he moved into the administrative side of education with North Kansas City Schools and the Kansas City Public Schools until his retirement in the mid-2000s. He enjoyed coaching Science Olympiad alongside his wife for many years.
Steve was an active member of Providence Baptist Church and operated as the sexton for their cemetery for many years. He put in endless hours of hard work to make sense of incomplete cemetery records and ensured the cemetery was always beautiful as can be. Steve worked on many building projects at PBC including the education wing in the 1990s and the new sanctuary in 2005. Along with many other maintanance and grounds improvements. You could often find him spending his summers building churches across the country with Builders for Christ.
In his free time, Steve enjoyed playing baseball, softball, golf, and fishing. He enjoyed numberous projects in his barn, anything from woodworking, machine repair, and tinkering with his tractor. He enjoyed attending the sporting events and concerts of his grandchildren Raef, Braden, Jackson, Molly, Maverick, Anna, and Pepper. He took much joy and pride in their smiles. Steve also loved spending time with them at the family farm watching them have fun together.
Steve was preceded in death by his mother, father, sister Beverly, and brother Danny.
Steve is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kathie; his daughter, Miranda and Marc, Raef, Braden, Molly, Anna; his son, Kaleb and Stephanie, Jackson, Maverick, Pepper; David May, Tim May, Debbie (May) Rocker, Tom May, Joe May, Sally (May) McCoy and Sheila (May) Durham, along with many other friends, extended family members, and former students.
