In trying to describe a perplexing math problem to a friend tonight, I said we needed the skills of our former Eastern Randolph math teacher, A. P. Brower. His memory and legacy lives on through the students he taught. Our condolences.

The passing of Mr. Abram Pressley Brower, "A.P." brings back a flood of memories.     He was always "Mr. Brower," to me, but you all know he was fine with "A.P." from students.   Mr. Brower was one of the best teachers I ever had.    He taught us Algebra II and "Advanced Math" at Eastern Randolph High School, in the late '70s.   Advanced math was the highest level math we could get back then, covering trigonometry and pre-calculus.    
The man was, quite simply, a genius -- one of the smartest people you'd ever meet.   A fully functioning engineer, who could design and build anything, found a passion for developing the minds of small-town and rural youth.   He did so with wit and wisdom.   He designed basketball and football plays that live on today; and I understand he even designed the press box support structure.   Each day in class, we were met by a smiling (smirking?) Mr. Brower -- there was always something behind that smile.   He had a mischievous streak.    Class began promptly and the chalk dust began flying.   By the end of first period, his gray wool pants were literally covered in chalk.   There was homework every day, and  a quiz every week.    Some of my classmates and I always did our math homework in study hall, racing to see who could finish first; and competing for that >100 quiz score (quizzes always offered extra credit).   I really don't remember it being hard -- Mr. Brower made the learning fun; and if we did our homework, we were rewarded with the ability to prove ourselves on the quiz.    The quizzes were returned to us folded long-ways, with the score on the outside.   I don't know why I find that striking, but it stands out.   I wanted that paper back so bad- to see if I had met Mr. Brower's expectations.   
Mr. Brower's students went on to college well-prepared; becoming teachers, engineers, doctors, nurses, computer scientists.   For those of us in engineering school, first semester calculus was mostly a review -- Mr. Brower had already covered that material.     I've now had three kids of my own.   They did great in school, including high level math in high school; and they, too, were blessed with a great calculus teacher.    They had Advanced Placement (AP) calculus, and met that challenge;   BUT, sadly, their experience didn't surpass mine, as they missed out on OUR "A.P."

As a teacher and coach, Mr. Brower was amazing. Most folks are good in a few things, lacking in others.  Not him.  He could do it all. I heard he drew out the plans for naming Liberty's streets.  They said he could draw plans for a house, and then turn around and build it. What we will most remember as students, is how he built young, impressionable lives by his example. He could turn a groups of girls into championship teams. He could draw up play after play football teams with his brilliant mind.  He could make math "real" for those of us who struggled with it. I think one of his great rewards may be if he is shown just how many lives he did impact for good. That number is higher than we can count.

Great man, great leader and always a great smile to share with others. So sorry for your loss, love and prayers.

He was my math nd physics tudor whic was my major at Guilford Collrge.  He and this reminds nme of many find memories at LHS.  I know his second wife Bonnie who is sister to Bonnie Folgeman.  He will be missed by his thousands of students over his caree as teacher and coach.  Regret I never visited with him while visiting Liberty, never knew he was a woodworker.  Now I will have to visit Bobbie to see his do nothing  machine.  I like Howard, Johnny, Issac, and Calvin had Mothers who were on the staff and faculty of LHS.

Phil, so sorry to learn of your Dad's passing.  During our lifetimes we are fortunate to know a few people who really stand out and have tremendous influence on our lives.  A.P. was one of those people for me.  I was fortunate to have him both as a teacher and football coach.  Best math teacher I ever had, and a great person who will be missed. My condolences to all the Brower family.

Algebra, trigonometry, geometry, solid geometry, physics . . . Mr. Brower taught me all of these at Liberty High.  He was a much better teacher than I was a student.  I shall remember him with fond gratitude and admiration for his intellect and dedicated service to the field of education and our community.

Thinking of Mr. Brower brings back so many memories of high school.  He taught me all my math classes as well as physics, and did it so well!  My condolences to the entire family. My thoughts and prayers are with AP's family.  He was a wonderful teacher to me for four years, and he just had a way with his students that few teachers could emulate. I always had respect for him.

Phil... Please know that our deepest sympathy is sent to you and your family at this difficult time.  Coach Brower was a remarkable teacher and coach at ERSH and was loved and admired by many.

Wow, losing A. P!!! I remember him so fondly from high school. He would challenge us in the classroom and not work the math problems for us! As Junior Class president, I was responsible for the Junior-Senior Prom (big deal back then). He was the class advisor. He would listen to me, offer his suggestions and send me on my way to make my decision. He let us be young adults and had such a great smile! He also taught his own son, Phil. We were in class together. Phil said that he was hard on him!! He showed no favoritism. He wanted us all to succeed. Our 1971 Eastern Randolph annual was dedicated to him. What a fine example for all of us teachers. I feel his loss, but not as much as his fine family. Love to all of you.

Phil, I am so sorry for your families loss and will keep all of you in my prayers.

AP would be red-faced were I to call him a Renaissance man in overalls, but that's what he was: scholar, teacher, father, farmer, artist, musician, mentor, mechanic, engineer, philosopher, friend.  I hope the angels are enjoying his blushing cheeks.

Just received the call telling me about the loss of the man who was basically a second father to me as I arrived in Randolph County in 1970. AP took me under his wing as a beginning teacher and coach offering me his extreme wisdom. Patience and love even to the extent of opening his home allowing me to become literally a member of the Brower family while I struggled to get on my feet. The countless memories of us sharing the bench during ER basketball games, hearing his dry wit as I would butcher a rabbit at close range, or showing me a simple way to solve a problem for which I did not have a clue. I will never forget the man or his family and the many, many things which we shared. I will be forever indebted.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time of great sorrow. He was the best math teacher I ever had in school. I remember when he coached and one could tell how much he enjoyed that. I always enjoyed seeing him out and around the town. He always picked on me, but then he would give me a hug and make me laugh. He is in his eternal home feeling no pain and is a Angel on God's team.
