
Elizabeth (Lib) Dowell Kuhn, 88, died on April 17, 2012. A resident of Friends Homes West in Greensboro since 2005, Mrs. Kuhn was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Charles R. Kuhn, Sr. A native of Raleigh, Mrs. Kuhn lived for more than 50 years in Liberty, NC, where she was an active member of the community and served as a teacher, member of the Liberty Library Board, Scout leader, president of the Liberty School PTA, Sunday School teacher, and devoted member of First Baptist Church.
Born into an established Raleigh family, she grew up in a home where education, faith, and public service were enduring values. The niece of North Carolina’s 55th Governor, J. Melville Broughton, she was among the first North Carolina students to attend the newly-instituted 12th grade in high school, which had been initiated in Gov. Broughton’s administration. A graduate of Meredith College, she began her career as a kindergarten supervisor and teacher in Raleigh, and later taught kindergarten in Burlington, NC and Liberty. After taking time off to raise her children, she returned to teaching, initially teaching first grade and then fourth grade for the remainder of her career at Liberty School. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa honorary society.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy R. Kuhn and son-in-law Roy M. Henwood of Washington, DC; her son, Charles R. Kuhn, Jr. of Greensboro; granddaughter, Ashley Kuhn of California; her brothers-in-law, Palmer Edwards and Robert Garrison, Sr.; and several cherished nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Willard Dowell and Minnie Broughton Dowell of Raleigh; and her sisters, Sarah Edwards; Martha Garrison; and Mary Willard Rich. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, April 21 at First Baptist Church, 659 S. Fayetteville Street, Liberty, with visitation at Friends Homes West, 6100 W. Friendly Avenue, at 7:00 PM on Friday, April 20. Private interment will occur later at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Liberty, PO Box 815, Liberty, NC 27298 or to the Friends Homes West Residents’ Assistance Fund.
