Mary Garrett Jackson was born January 16, 1929, in Greensboro, NC to Thomas Cleveland and Lessie Swing Garrett. She had two brothers, Bill and Wade (both deceased). Mary graduated from Nathanael Green in 1947 and shortly thereafter went to work at Sears Roebuck Mail Order Center in Greensboro. It was there that she met her future husband, Don Jackson, as well as some of her best, life-long friends.
Mary and Don were married on May 11, 1952, and moved to Houston, Texas in 1966 shortly after their daughter Kim was born. Mary and Don moved back to Kimesville in 1972 and built the house where she spent the remainder of her life. Don died on December 24, 1992, after a battle with cancer and Mary remarried to Mike Hughes in 2005.
Mary's family was always her life, and she was so grateful to have been able to keep her only granddaughter, Jenni Regan, after Kim went back to work. That time held special memories for her and formed a special bond between herself and Jenni.
Mary's hobbies included working crossword puzzles, painting, and gardening. She loved working in her yard with her flowers (her favorite was the sunflower). She was always an animal lover, and all manner of animals were drawn to her.
Mary attended Mt. Pleasant UMC all her life, and her church family was extremely important to her. She was unable to attend church in person the last few years of her life, and dearly missed her church family.
Mary is survived by her daughter Kim, son-in-law Bill, grand-daughter Jenni, husband Mike, nephews Tom, Rick, Jon, Joe and Jeff Garrett and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Mary was an adored mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend and will be greatly missed. Donations may be made in her memory to Hospice/AuthoraCare Collective of Burlington (www.authoracare.org) or the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org).
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 4400 Alamance Church Road, Liberty, NC. Mary will lie in repose in the church sanctuary one hour prior to the service. She will be laid to rest in the church cemetery.
