

She was a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church, Southeast Volunteer Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary, and the 1946 graduating class of Nathanael Greene School. She retired from Neese’s Sausage after 33 years of service.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 6, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. at Tabernacle United Methodist Chapel officiated by Rev. Dr. John Woods and Rev. Aaron Moss; burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Tabernacle Chapel and other times at the home of her son, Max.
Mary was the daughter of the late Melvin Murphy Coble and Mary Jane Clapp Coble and was also preceded in death by her husband, William D. Layton; one sister, Mamie Sawyers and three brothers, Murphy Coble, Henry Coble and Jack Coble.
Surviving are her sons, Lynn Layton of Climax, Max Layton and his wife, Elaine of Julian; one brother, Frank Coble; four grandchildren, Deana Spainhour, Kristen Layton, Kimberly Mandell, and Alisha Layton and four great-grandchildren.
The family is grateful to the staff at Clapp’s Assisted Living for their excellent care to Mary for the past 6 years and they would also like to extend their gratitude to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro for their care and visits for the past three months.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 5721 Methodist Road, Greensboro, NC 27406.
