James “Jim” Jacob Matthews III died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on May 3, 2021. He was 68 years old. Jim was born in Richmond, Va on September 17, 1952 to James Jacob Matthews Jr. and Vivian Marria Cutright Matthews. Jim is survived by his sisters Regina Gail Petti and Geneva Carol Kramer, wife Coleen Debra Matthews and a host of loving family members and friends. Jim loved his family, he loved his friends, he loved the Lord and he loved life.
Jim was passionate about his nieces, nephews and their children. He shared his love, life, gifts and talents with the deepest desire for each to continue to pursue creativity and live everyday to its fullest.
He was an adventure seeker, and many times created adventure of his own. An avid motorcyclist, hunter, fisherman, scuba diver, wood-smith, and believed all things are possible. He sought knowledge through experience and wanted to share it with others. Through his love of photography, he captured and shared special moments - from the Tail of The Dragon, waterfalls and mountains, to daily photos of flowers sent with morning texts to family and friends. And, through his love of food and always trying something new, he enjoyed countless dinners, celebrations and table-side chats that furthered his bond with many.
Jim was a consummate example of love, kindness and generosity. If it was important to someone, it was important for him. Jim knew no strangers and believed the best in each of them - he was a friend, mentor and brother to many, generously sharing his time and experience that enriched, encouraged and uplifted all around him.
