Sinie Ann Scott-Brown, affectionately called “Aunt Sinie”, “Sister Sinie”, “Scottie”, “Sister Scott”, “Sister Brown”, “Miss Scott”, “Miss Brown”, “Teacher”, “Teacher Scott”, “Titis” and “Sweet Rose” passed away suddenly in Margate, Florida on Saturday, September 5, 2020. She was 78 years old.
Sinie was born to the late Doris “Dor Dor” and Joseph “Beadle” Scott on February 4, 1942, in Kensington, Portland, Jamaica, West Indies. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Elizabeth “Bebiz” Minott, and two brothers Noel “Boisy” Minott and Auralius “Ceato” Scott. Sinie attended Manchioneal All-Age School, Church Teachers College, and Edna Manley School of Visual and Performing Arts. She retired from a long career as a teacher after serving 40 years in the Ministry of Education, which began with teaching at Manchioneal All-Age School and ended at Happy Grove High School, Hector's River, Portland. Sinie was brought up in the Anglican Church and accepted the Lord at an early age. She was a woman of God.
Sinie’s personal accomplishments and contributions to the community were immeasurable. She was a play writer, producer, director, actress, Brownie Guide at Manchioneal All -Age School; member of the Manchioneal Drama Group; Secretary of Manchioneal Social Welfare Council; member of the East Portland Teacher’s District Association, Council Representative for Jamaica Teacher’s Association, and Founder and president of Forte District Citizen's Association in Manchioneal. In addition to her community service and academic teaching, Sinie coached students at Manchioneal All-Age and Happy Grove High Schools for Jamaica Speech and Drama National Festival competitions, where the students won gold, silver, and bronze medals. She coached students for the National Music Festival competitions and won gold and bronze medals; and she coached a Spelling Bee champion at Manchioneal All-Age School. Sinie remained a steadfast community servant for the Lord until the day of her passing. She was a dedicated member of the St. Thomas’ Anglican Church choir, the church committee, Sunday school teacher, Synod Representative, President of the Youth Fellowship, Secretary, and a Lay preacher.
Sinie immigrated to USA in 1992 where she continued her teaching career and her service to the community and the Lord. She received many certificates of recognition while at Huntington Learning Center, Coral Springs, Florida. She was an active member of the choirs of Crawford United Methodist Church, Bronx, New York; St. Andrew Catholic Church, Coral Springs, Florida; and St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church, Coral Springs, Florida, where she also was a member of the Episcopal Church Women (ECW), Senior Saints and participated in feeding the homeless at St. Lawrence Chapel. In addition to singing on choirs, Sinie was always heard signing joyful songs as she went about her day.
Sinie was an inspiration to all who knew her, and there are many, both in Jamaica and in the United States. She lived as Christ asked us to do. "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, and forgiving one another.” She clothed herself with compassion, humility, kindness, and gentleness, as the Apostle Paul asked us to do. She was a role model, a devoted mother, a mentor, a counselor, a disciplinarian, a loyal friend, a prayer warrior, and a stalwart of the Christian faith. Sinie exuded love of mankind. Her smile was infectious. Her spirit was gentle. Her kindness was immense. She gave and expected nothing in return. She blessed many. Many lives are richer and better today, because of her acts of kindness, prayers, dedication, and commitment to serve in whatever capacity she could.
Sinie was proud of her family and leaves behind nothing but fond memories. She is survived by her beloved husband, Charles Brown; daughter, Donnette Brown McLennon. She also leaves behind her “adopted” son and nephew Anthony “Tony” Scott (Ena), and “adopted” daughter and niece Dorrette Scott-Grey (Barrington), and nephew Rohan “Hopeton” Scott. Her loss is also mourned by four nieces, two nephews, nine grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren, and a host of family, friends, past students, and acquaintances.
