Sue was born October 14, 1949 in Philadelphia, PA., the daughter of the late Howard and Betty Bennett Gunning.
In 1968, Sue graduated from Olney High School in Philadelphia, PA. She then went on to work for Sears Roebuck and Company in the office. They liked her so much there they gave her the position to train others coming in for the job. Sue always knew that her career was not her lifetime goal, she wanted to get married and create a family.
In January of 1970 she met Ron. She went on a blind date with his brother, Dennis. Dennis brought her back to the house and Ron fell head over heels for her. Dennis and Sue dated for a few months and realized they were not meant to be together. After that Ron called her and asked her out on a date. That’s when their love story began.
Sue married Ronald McDevitt on October 7, 1972. The two were each other’s life- long companions and friends. They were blessed with four children: Melanie, Brandon, Summerly and Ashley.
Sue was a beautiful person inside and out. She was the most loving, sweetest and patient person anyone could know. People would call her “Sweet Sue”. Sue did things that most people would or could not do. She took care of other children out of her own home so those parents could go to work, and she even took into her home her sister in law for two years and her five children when they had nowhere to go. She loved reading books, crossword puzzles and her collection of movies. Most of all She loved her children and grandchildren unconditionally .
Sue is survived by her loving husband Ron of 50 years, daughter Melanie ( Ricciardi) and son in law Ernest, son Brandon and daughter in law Iovanna, daughter Summerly (Paiva) and son in law Felippe, daughter Ashley (Weiss) and son in law Stephen, six grandchildren Nicholas, Marissa, Liam, Isabella, Connor, Victoria and one on the way.
The family invites you to join honoring Sue at 11:30am on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at Horizon Funeral & Cremation Services, Lighthouse Point, FL. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers the family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
