She was born on January 28, 1927, in Blue Eye, Missouri, to
the late Tommy Ninevy Taylor and Chloe Alice Watkins Taylor. Joy is survived by her
brother, Lowell Dean Taylor, her daughter and spouse, Cynthia Ellen Dougherty Cantua
and Stephen Wesley Cantua, her son and spouse, Michael Dean Dougherty and Grace
Ann Dougherty, Jennifer Ann Dougherty Young, her daughter, her stepson, Ed
Culbertson, as well as 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by her father, mother, sister-in-law, Lucy Taylor, granddaughter, Lynne Marion
Cantua, husband, Clair Culbertson, stepdaughter, Debbie Culbertson, and stepsons,
Robert Culbertson and Stanley Culbertson.
Joy was a well-educated woman who valued learning. She attended Blue Eye Arkansas and Lincoln Elementary and High School for her primary education, and later graduated from Chico State and California State University Sacramento with a teaching degree. She dedicated her career to educating
young minds as a 4th-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School. In addition to her teaching career, she worked and retired from McClellan AFB as a Hydraulic Mechanic and also worked and retired from Hewlett-Packard.
Outside of her professional life, Joy had a deep passion for music. She was an accomplished musician who could play more than five different instruments and had the opportunity to play the French Horn full time in an all-female orchestra. She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Lincoln Women's Club, The Junior Women’s Club and the Lincoln Southern Baptist Church. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she shared her musical talents by playing the piano at church.
Joy's love for music and her social nature led her to form friendships that spanned the globe. She was a very social person who made friends easily and never judged others based on their social standing or the color of their skin. She opened her home to many people from around the world, hosting them during their
travels. Her warm and welcoming nature touched the lives of many. In her free time, Joy loved to travel and explore different parts of the world. She cherished the experiences and friendships she made during her travels. Alongside her passion for travel, she continued to nurture her musical talents throughout her life.
Services to celebrate Joy's life will be held at the Lincoln Southern Baptist Church on Friday, December 8th, 2023 at 1:00 PM. The Lincoln Funeral Home in Lincoln, California, will be assisting the family with the arrangements. Joy Marceline Culbertson will be remembered as a loving mother, dedicated teacher, talented musician, and a friend to all who knew her. Her impact on the lives she touched will be cherished and remembered by her family and friends.
