He was born in Denver, Colorado. He was a very accomplished gymnast, starting in high school and continuing on into college, earning a scholarship to the University of Colorado at Boulder. He specialized in high bar and won several medals. At the time, he was the only gymnast in the Big 8 who could perform a move on the high bar named the Takamoto, which earned him high scores. He graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in Marketing. Richard fortuitously met his wife, Patricia, in Denver at a dance studio where his best friend worked (not Richard!). They were married and moved to Bozeman, Montana, where Richard worked for Enco Oil Company (now known as Exxon). Both of his daughters were born in Bozeman and the family moved to South San Francisco for Richard to work in medical sales shortly after his youngest daughter was born.
Later, after moving to Pleasanton, he changed careers, first teaching himself to program computers then working as a software technician for Acme Scale Company. After living in Pleasanton for many years, he retired to Lincoln and fulfilled a dream of living on a golf course. His interests included genealogy, investing, and especially golf. His greatest accomplishments included being married to and taking care of his loving wife, Patricia for 57 years; raising two amazing daughters; and chasing after his grandson, Alex. Richard is survived by his brother, Neal, and Neal’s wife, Carol; as well as by his wife, Patricia; his two daughters Laura and Jacquelyn, and their respective husbands Steve and Sean, and his grandson, Alex.
