Al was born in Crete, Nebraska and grew up in Lincoln, graduating from Lincoln High School. On May 16, 1959, he married the love of his life, Joyce. They celebrated 62 years of marriage until Joyce's passing in 2020. Al built his own family home in 1973 and diligently maintained it until his passing. Al was employed by Minnegasco until his retirement in 1998. During retirement, he started his own business as a handyman. Al loved frisbee and was passionate about looking through his telescope at the galaxy, moon and stars. Growing up, he enjoyed hiking with his brothers in Colorado. Once he had a family of his own, Al and Joyce took their two daughters on numerous vacations and road trips. Their adventures ranged from local Nebraska destinations to picturesque sites around the country.
He is survived by his daughters Roxanne Mares and Julie Burt; grandchildren Ally Burt, Courtney Zimbelman-Burt, Nathan Mares, and Nicholas Mares; brothers Robert Mares, Wayne Mares, and Arlin Mares; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceded in death by his wife, Joyce (Lawrence), son Mark, brother Ronnie Mares, father John Mares and mother Claudia Bausch.
Al's family is fulfilling his dream of visiting space by sending a symbolic portion of his ashes into space. The family encourages friends and family to plant a tree in Al's honor.
