

George Lewis Stephens, age 90, of Omaha, passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2023. George was born February 10, 1933 to Elmer and Gail Stephens. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Carole Stephens, and their daughter Sharon Stephens and their son Michael (Lisa) Stephens all of Omaha. Grandchildren Lauren (Josh) Monroe, Erica Jensen, Trevor and Andrew Stephens; great grandchildren Jaxon, Aspen and Colton Monroe, and many nieces and nephews. Other surviving relatives are his sister-in-law Joan Tietjen Bohrer of Red Cloud, Nebraska and cousins Steve and Dianne Lawson of Harlan, Iowa.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his son David Stephens, his brother Jack Stephens, brother Dick Stephens, and sister Janet Stephens Sullivan. George graduated from Lincoln Northeast High School and Nebraska Wesleyan University. He then served for two years with the U.S. Marine Corps, and upon his return to Lincoln he met and married Carole Tietjen. They were married on June 30, 1957, in Lincoln.
George then earned his M.A. and Ed.D degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He went on to spend his working career as a teacher, professor, and counselor. He retired from Metropolitan Community College after serving there for 30 years. George was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Omaha and volunteered there. He also spent time volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, the Food Bank and political campaigns.
He loved sports and played all sports in high school and then excelled in college and all his adult life in both tennis and pickleball.
