“I’m on my way to Saturday and I wish you come along with me”—Harry Belafonte. Just the Friday before she died, Glaucia was inviting others to dance with her. Right until the end, she was dancing her way through life. Glaucia Teixeira Washington Hansen was born on October 24, 1928, in Varginha, Brazil to Washington and Carmelia Washington. Glaucia and two of her sisters moved to Rio de Janeiro after high school. A few years later, she lived in New York City for a short time before going to Morocco to help her twin sister, Lygia, care for her newborn baby. While in Morocco, she met Galen Hansen, and they were married a few months later on July 28, 1959, in Gibraltar, Spain. The couple went back to the U.S. to start a family in Nutley, New Jersey. They later lived in Riverside, California, and Bellevue, Nebraska. An ardent supporter of education, Glaucia spoke four languages. She attended college while raising her family, ultimately obtaining master’s degrees from the University of Nebraska in French and Spanish literature. She also went on to become a U.S. citizen in 1970. Glaucia enjoyed music, literature, art and wine. She’ll be remembered for her impulsive and fun loving nature—she liked to shock others by telling somewhat inappropriate jokes. Most of all, she will be known for sharing her love with family and friends. Glaucia is lovingly remembered by daughters Sharon (Jeff) Houchin, Kareen (Tom) Dougherty, Nadine (Pat) Dougherty; grandchildren Andrew Houchin, Courtney Houchin, Shannon (Jeremy) Mollet, Sarah Dougherty, Tommy Dougherty, Megan Dougherty and Tyler Dougherty; sisters Aglae (Switoslaw) Saitschenko and Lys Washington; and many relatives in the U.S. and Brazil. She was preceded in death by her husband Galen, parents Washington and Carmelia Washington, twin sister Lygia Washington, brothers Geraldo, Ivo and Solon Washington, and special friend Don Zeiss. Glaucia was such a vibrant, loving person, she was dancing and giving hugs till the end. To honor her, we invite you to share a memory and to raise a glass to toast her. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the University of Nebraska Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association or your local food pantry.
“I'm on my way to Saturday
Where the cherry wine is flowing free
I'm on my way to the moonlit skies
And I think I'll stop at paradise
Cause I'm on my way to Saturday
And I wish you come along with me.”
—Harry Belafonte, “I’m On My Way To Saturday”
