

Helen Brchan, 90 of Lincoln passed away March 7, 2015. Helen Ann (Mares) Brchan was born in Swanton, NE, February 13, 1925, to Joe and Agnes (Valenta) Mares. Helen entered rural school, District 16 , near Swanton, until the family moved north of Fairbury, NE where she finished grade school, followed by her graduation from Fairbury High School in 1943. She worked in Fairbury as a sales clerk for Hested Five & Ten Cent Store, afterwards as a telephone operator. Upon moving to Lincoln Helen worked for Gold & Company for several years. Later she worked as a sales clerk at Bradfield and Terminal Drug Stores; and cafeterias for the Lincoln Public Schools and Union Bank. Helen was a volunteer for many years with Telecare. July 12, 1951, Helen married Milo Brchan at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Lincoln, NE. Their son, Larry was born in May of 1955. Helen loved the outdoors. Gardening was her favorite past-time, especially flowers. She was a member of the Lincoln Garden Club for many years. She adored birds, especially cardinals, and owls. And loved dancing with her husband Milo. She was a long time member of Saint Paul Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary, NARFE, W.F.L.A. and Lifetime member of V.F.W. 131 Auxiliary. Preceeded in death by: husband, Milo Brchan; parents, Joe and Agnes Mares; brothers, Adolph, Emil and Victor Mares. Survived by: Son, Larry and Rodene (Essman) Brchan, Lincoln, NE; grandson, Jason and Sally Brchan, Omaha, NE; granddaughter, Jessica and Jason McCarthy, Fargo, ND; great-grandsons, Jaxon, Jett and Jagger McCarthy; nephew, Joe and Cheryl Mares, Friend, NE; niece Diane and Robert Porter, Henderson, NV; sister in law, Claire Mares, Fremont, NE and sister in law, Lillian Mares, Seward, NE. A Celebration of Helen’s Life will be Tuesday March 10, 2015 at 10:00 AM at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
