Myles Winston Davis, Sr. of Lincoln, Nebraska, was called home to be with the Lord on November 28th, 2021, at the age of 80. Myles was born in Pittsburgh, PA., on June 15th, 1941, the 5th of 9 children born to Walter and Luella Davis.
Myles met the love of his life, Martha Williams, when they were teenagers in Pittsburgh. Myles was with a friend when he saw this beautiful lady get off the streetcar and asked his friend, "Who is THAT"? To which his friend replied, "That's Martha Williams."
Myles wasted no time in contacting Martha. She told Myles that she was already seeing someone, to which Myles replied, "You tell that other fella it's over," and the rest is history!
The two were united in marriage in 1962. Myles and Martha relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1963, and the Lord blessed them with six children. Myles absolutely adored Martha, and their three kisses any time before Myles left the house were legendary; after all the years of marriage, they continued to pray together, laugh together and serve together for 51 years upon Martha’s passing in 2014. He would always say, "She's the sugar in my coffee."
Shortly after moving to Lincoln, Myles accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Later, he would become the Pastor of Angelic Temple Church of God in Christ, started by his older brother, the late Donald Davis, Sr., who significantly influenced Myles's spiritual growth.
He would serve as the Pastor of Angelic Temple for 44 years, with his wife Martha faithfully by his side until her passing in 2014. Myles would eventually serve as the Superintendent in the Monte J. Bradford District - Eastern Nebraska Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction where he humbly and faithfully served and carried out the mission to share about Jesus Christ! At the time of his passing, he would be the longest-serving African American pastor in Lincoln, Nebraska, and the Eastern Nebraska Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of the Churches of God in Christ.
Myles was the epitome of a man who provided for his family—sometimes holding down several jobs to put food on the table for his family. He would eventually start his own janitorial business, where he would go on to clean some of Lincoln's most prominent businesses. Myles's work ethic was impeccable, and he never wanted to let his customers down. He would often tell his kids that if he weren't satisfied with the cleaning, neither would the customer. After over 40 years, Myles retired and dedicated his life full-time to the ministry.
Myles was a devoted and loving husband and father. He was passionate about always being there for his six children. Rarely missing any of their events and always standing by with a word of encouragement. Myles and Martha were the king and queen of checkers in the Davis household as their epic games would go on for hours while the kids watched in awe. He would often tell his kids, "You’re a Champion." He also would display his basketball skills with his epic "hook" shot!
If not in Church, Myles enjoyed sports, particularly boxing, Husker football, and his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers! Myles also had a powerful voice, and his favorite song was Beulah land, which he would often sing to his congregation at Angelic Temple! He was an avid reader and loved to study the Bible. In the mornings, Myles would make his coffee and sit on the back porch, and as he would say, "Just visiting with the Lord." He had an infectious smile that drew people to him. His quiet and humble demeanor served him well as he welcomed everyone and judged no one.
Myles will be remembered as a faithful Husband, Father, friend, and follower of Jesus Christ.
Myles was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Luella Davis, his wife, Martha Davis, sisters Helen, Doris, Carmen, and his brothers, Walter, Donald, and Maurice, and his son Myles Davis Jr.
Myles is survived by his daughters Emily R. Davis of Tallahassee, FL, Michelle A. Francis (Crenel) of Gainesville, FL, and sons; Mark S. Davis (Candace) of Lincoln, NE, Daniel A.
