Phyllis DuPre, age 85, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025 in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was born on April 13, 1940, in Port Huron, Michigan, and grew up in the nearby town of Marine City. She was the beloved daughter of Harold Kammer and Edith (Hobson) Kammer and the sister of Ronald and James (Jimmy).
From an early age, Phyllis displayed a zest for life and a love of music. She was such a talented dancer that her father built a dance studio in their basement, where Phyllis taught dance classes to local children. After a knee injury ended her ability to dance, Phyllis went on to play the accordion, saxophone and was a majorette for her high school marching band.
After graduating high school, Phyllis moved to Detroit to attend secretarial college. While in Detroit, she met and married Raymond Sleep and they had their first child Michael (1964). They moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1969 where they later had daughters Jennifer (1971) and April (1972). As the kids grew, their home was always open to friends and many of whom became extended family.
She was a dedicated stay at home mom until the passing of her husband in 1981. Phyllis began working for Broward County Board of Commissioners where she had a long and dedicated career of over 25 years. Her professionalism, dedication, and spirit left a lasting impact on her colleagues and community.
After retiring, Phyllis moved to Lincoln. She continued to stay active, working at Coldwater Creek. She made a warm and welcoming home on Sedalia Drive, where she formed many close friendships.
Phyllis was a vibrant, social butterfly who thrived on connection and conversation. She enjoyed shopping with friends, a good glass of wine…or two, traveling throughout the U.S or cheering on her beloved Florida Gators.
Time with family was her greatest joy. She never passed up a board game or a quiet afternoon on her back deck. She took pride in her appearance, always dressed with elegance and style. Her laugh was infectious, her presence uplifting, and her heart always open.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and husband. She is survived by her son Michael Sleep of Orlando, daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Bruce Doll of Lincoln, daughter April Quoma of Lincoln, her grandchildren; Jonathan, Katie, Aaron, Grace, and Gavin, her dear sister-in-law, Kay Kammer, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and countless friends.
A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday May 1, 2025 at 10:00am at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family in person or may be sent to the funeral home in care of Lincoln Memorial.
