He worked as a machinist for Burlington Northern Railroad for many years along with co-owning Saylor's Cafe in Lincoln, Nebraska in the 1980's. Rodger loved spending time with his family, especially as "Papa" to his grandchildren. In the past, he would dress up as Santa and deliver presents to his grandchildren and neighbor kids from his sleigh in the front yard. Rodger also participated in a bowling league at Sun Valley Lanes with his co-workers from Burlington Northern Railroad. He was a proud Army Vietnam veteran with a Purple Heart and belonged to the VFW Club. Rodger was a lover of all animals, especially birds and fish. He loved Husker football and enjoyed watching the games along with collecting Husker memorabilia and banks. He will be remembered for the abundance of Christmas lights he'd use to decorate his house along with his giving and loving heart.
Rodger spent over 27 years with his best friend, Donna Spevak. They enjoyed camping, running errands to Walmart and Menards, and eating at Lee's Chicken. They also looked forward to going to concerts, with Alan Jackson as a favorite, and Rodger always singing along.
