Stuart A Pauley slipped away on August 2, 2020, a Covid-19 statistic, following several years of declining health. He was born April 7, 1949 and raised in Lincoln. As a boy he had a paper route and was active in Boy Scouts, serving in the role of bugler rousing the troops in camp with "Reveille" while still lying prone in his pajamas in the tent.
Stuart was a 1967 graduate of Lincoln High where he participated in gymnastics, vocal music groups and played the saxophone. He received an athletic scholarship to UNL where he lettered in gymnastics 1967-69, and became a proud member of N Club. He served in the U.S. Army from 1971-74, at Ft. Lewis, Washington and Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. Upon discharge he returned to Lincoln and UNL where he obtained an Engineering degree in Construction Management in 1977. He took great pride in his work as a hands-on superintendent for Kingery Construction from 1977-2009.
Stuart was a quiet man who didn't care much for idle chit-chat. If you wanted to hear his voice, ask him about his garden or the price of gas when he pumped it in the 60s. He enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, card games, stamp and coin collecting, gardening and working with his hands. His parents held football tickets starting in the 1940s and fall Saturdays were spent at Memorial Stadium with mom and dad and Uncle Ernie, where Stuart sat in his grandpa Pauley's lone seat.
Stuart met Joyce Maulsby on a blind date in 1970 and they were married at Trinity UMC on August 12, 1972. While a member of Trinity he enjoyed singing in their choir. His proudest personal moment was the birth of his son Nate, whom he supported in his scouting and sports endeavors. Typical of Stuart, he remained stoic and uncomplaining in the last eight years as his health declined and he had to give up so much, most notably driving since he was a much better driver than anyone on the streets of Lincoln, particularly both his mother and wife.
Stuart's quiet presence will be missed by Joyce, their beloved son Nate, and his sister Sharon Yockers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Betty Pauley.
Honorary pallbearers, high school buddies who stood for him at his wedding, Jerry Buk, Bob Hinman, Mike Newlon. Memorials to Make-a-Wish Nebraska, 8033 S. 15th St., Suite B, Lincoln 68512.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 5, 2020 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 South 14th Street, Lincoln, Nebraska 68512. Services will be Thursday, August 6, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. Condolences may be left at lincolnfh.com.
