'A simple woman with a simple life.'
It pains me to admit, but I have passed away at the age of 99 years old. I thought I was going to make it to 110 years old; at least that's what my doctor told me! Through my years I have seen war, death, sadness, and joy. I lived a full life and traveled the world. Please do not mourn for me, for I am at peace.
Per my wish, there will be a cremation and no services. I will once again become one with Earth; all you will need to do is think of me and I will always be there in heart and soul.
Born in Shanghai, China, I had a passion for learning, traveling, and challenging my own boundaries. I was part of the first coed class to graduate from the prestigious St. John's University in Shanghai. Afterwards, I came to the University of Nebraska, where I received a master's in political science. This is where I met my loving husband of 45 years, Chen Hwa Yien.
I earned a second master's degree in library science from Rutgers University in New Jersey. Then I worked as an acquisitions librarian at the University of Nebraska and University of Kansas. I returned to the University of Nebraska where I retired as a tenured chairperson of library acquisitions.
My family always believed in helping others. As one of the first Chinese families in Lincoln, we understood the difficulties in assimilating to a new culture. We assisted both Chinese faculty and students to succeed in a new environment.
Preceded in death by husband; Chen Hwa Yien. Helen is survived by her son; Dean (Valentine), their daughter; Kay (Andrew) and their children; Ciaran and Samaire, their son; Kevin (Jennifer) and their daughter; Emma, daughter; Jean (Paul), daughter; Anne (Erik), their children; Alex and Andrew, and daughter; Joan (Eric). We as her children will always hold great memories of our mother and are inspired by her generosity and zest for life.
The family would like to thank the 3rd floor staff of GracePointe. They filled her life with laughter, joy, compassion, patience, and understanding. It is with great gratitude that we acknowledge the staff for their exceptional care. Thank you to the Tabitha hospice team for making her comfortable during her final journey.
Memorial: All I ask is to always be humble, kind, generous, and respectful to others.
