Virginia R. Buchanan

Virginia Buchanan, 88, passed away on March 31, 2026, at her home in Hickman, Nebraska. Born on June 23, 1937, in Baldwyn, Mississippi, Virginia was the daughter of Octo and Mary (Austin) Houston and the youngest of five sisters. Virginia graduated from Ole Miss with a degree in teaching.

In October of 1962, Virginia married Malcolm “Buck” Buchanan in Mississippi. They lived there as well as several years in Tennessee before she and Buck moved with their three children to Nebraska following Buck's job promotion with an insurance company, ultimately making their home in Hickman. From that home, Virginia created a place of warmth and welcome for family and friends alike.

Virginia was a thoughtful and simple woman with a great sense of humor. She cared deeply for those around her. Buck’s life partner and a devoted homemaker, Virginia found joy in gardening, sewing for family and friends, and bird watching. She was a faithful presence at her grandchildren’s sporting events and other school activities, always cheering them on with pride. Above all, she was known for always providing a home-cooked meal for her family —their favorites included her potato salad and pecan pie.

Virginia was a member of the Hickman American Legion Auxiliary and the Hickman Presbyterian Church, where her steady involvement reflected her values and her care for community.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm, and her sisters, Opal Houston, Margaret Nichols, Orpha Cates, and Dixie Davis. She is survived by her son, Craig (Ronda) Buchanan; daughters, Michelle Niederhaus and Leslie (Michael Miller) Buchanan-Bitenieks; grandchildren, Braden Niederhaus, Griffin (Emily) Niederhaus, Grant Buchanan, and Brock Buchanan; and great-grandson, Judson Niederhaus.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home at 6800 S 14th Street, Lincoln, Nebraska, with entombment to follow at Lincoln Memorial Park. Luncheon will be served after entombment.

Memorials may be given to the family for future designation.
