

Portland - Mr. Kenneth F. Harlow, age 93, a resident of the Poland Range Rd. in Pownal, died late Monday evening January 23rd at Maine Medical Center with family at his side. He was born in Hartford, VT December 6, 1919 a son of Forest E. and Laura I. (Woodward) Harlow. Mr. Harlow was educated in Hartford, Vermont schools and graduated from Hartford High School in 1938. Following high school, he graduated from the Vermont State School of Agriculture in Randolph Center, VT. On April 4, 1942 he married the former Dorothy E. Taft who predeceased him on May 9, 1997. Mr. Harlow was a Military Veteran having served his country in the United States Army during World War II from his entry into active service in 1942 until his Honorable Discharge in 1945. In addition to several other medals he received while in the service, in February of 1999, Mr. Harlow was awarded The Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in ground combat against the armed enemy during WW II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations. Following his discharge from the service, he and his wife settled in Rhode Island to raise their family and then moved to Pownal in 1957. Most of Kenneth's working background and experience was many years in agriculture and farming. For several years he owned and operated Golden Acres Farm Convenience Store in Pownal, Maine and later worked for a time as a foreman in a dairy plant. He also worked for a time for the postal service. Ken was a lifemember of the Amvets Post #33 in Jay and spent many years as a 4H leader in Pownal. Among his favorite enjoyments were Baseball and Football. In his retirement years, Ken was very active and involved in volunteer service in the Amvets, earning numerous awards and certificates over the years including Department and Post Commander achievements, Distinguished and Outstanding Service awards, and outstanding service as a Volunteer. He received a State of Maine Volunteer Certificate of Recognition from former State Governor John McKernan. Ken was also recognized in 1989 by the D.A.V. with an appreciation dinner for he and his wife for a time of dedicated and outstanding service to the D.A.V. and fellow Veterans. He was a proud Veteran who greatly enjoyed helping and giving back to his fellow Veterans and was a loving, devoted and hard-working husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed. He leaves six sons Peter F. Harlow of Cumberland,Thomas E. Harlow and wife Lorna of Durham, Garry Harlow and wife Sue of Lewiston,Larry Harlow and wife Beverly of Pownal, Daniel Harlow of Westbrook and Timothy Harlow and wife Lesley of Pownal; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a brother Albert E. Savage and wife Janet of Orwell, VT and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy, an infant daughter and granddaughter Vanessa.
