Herbert Edwin Riedl was born October 30, 1925 to Marie and Jordan Riedl in Cicero, IL. He attended Daniel Burnham Elementary School and graduated from Morton High School. The day after graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Academy, he attended the Navy’s electrician school in Detroit, MI and then trained at the submarine base in New London, CT. From there he was sent to Guam and served on two submarines in the Pacific theater, as an electrician in the Engine Room. He was sponsored on the floor of the U.S. Senate for an officer’s commission, by the late Senator Scott Lucas, and promoted to Lieutenant. After the war he attended The Georgia Institute of Technology, on the G.I. bill, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering. He then earned a Masters degree at Illinois Institute of Technology, where he also taught Economics and Labor Relations in the evening program while working for General Electric’s Hotpoint Division.
In 1953 he married Dorothy Marie Corley in Christ Lutheran Church in Oak Park, IL. They were blessed with three children whom they raised in Mt. Prospect, IL. Ed served the Lord as a Sunday School teacher for teenage boys, an usher, and a Chaplain for the American Legion.
He also served as the Precinct Captain for the neighborhood in Mt. Prospect, was president of the PTA at Westbrook School, and served on the planning committee at Prospect High School. During his career, Ed held executive positions and negotiated labor contracts for many manufacturing corporations. Because of his expertise, he testified to the Illinois Congress on how various policies would effect companies and employees. After retiring from his career, he worked to accredit Northern Illinois University’s Engineering program with the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and develop a co-op program for NIU engineering students. In retirement, Ed and Dorothy lived in Naperville, IL where Ed enjoyed golfing with his family and friends, and being an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
In marriage Ed took his family to hike and climb in the mountains of Rocky Mountain National Park and they marveled at God’s work. They later built a house in Grand Lake Colorado and learned to ski. He was a perfect father and husband and we all miss him very much.
He is survived by his beloved wife Dorothy, of 67 years, his three children: Laura Kyle (Richard), Carrie Ford (Bryan) and John Riedl (Marina); his grandchildren: Matthew Kyle (Meagan), Emily Colborn (Kyle), Andrew Kyle, Bryan Ford Jr. (Stacey), Brett Ford (Abby), Morgan Riedl, Stephanie Riedl, Sydney Riedl, and Gregory Riedl, and six great grandchildren. Ed was a strong and faithful Christian. Ed went to be with the Lord, on April 6, 2020. Gifts may be sent to Trinity Lutheran Church, 1101 Kimberly Way, Lisle, IL 60532. A memorial service is being planned for a later date, and will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lisle, IL.
