Alan N. Furst

He leaves his beloved wife, Ruth Ann of Livingston, daughter Jill Furst Ahluwalia (Sid) of Greenwich Ct., his brother Henry (Karen) of Verona and his sister Cathy Shmalo (Mitchell) of Miami, Florida and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Daniel. Alan is also survived by Lynn Jacobson, his former wife. They were the parents of two children who they adored.

After he received his LCSW degree, Alan founded the Community Psychiatric Institute of East Orange in 1972 with his father, a psychiatrist. He served there as the Executive Director for 51 years where he pioneered the concept of day treatment for psychiatric patients that served as a national model. Over the years he expanded the program to include substance abuse treatment. Over the course of his career, he was instrumental in helping many thousands of patients with his personal attention to each one’s problems and concerns. It gave him great joy that his daughter, Jill, followed in his footsteps by working in the mental health field and becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner.

Alan loved every moment of life and lived it to the fullest. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, exploring fine restaurants and listening to American standards and jazz. He was loved by many and relished the camaraderie of his many supportive and loyal friends, too numerous to mention without the risk of omitting even one, with whom he enjoyed companionship, cheer and chuckles. But nothing compared to the time he was able to spend each day with Ruth Ann, with whom he shared a special bond, and the love they shared to his very last moment.

The family will be receiving guests for Alan on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 from 8:15 AM to 8:45 AM at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, New Jersey 07039, followed by a funeral service at 9:00am. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 225 Ridgedale Avenue, East Hanover, New Jersey 07936.

Shiva will be observed at the home of Teddy and Maria Wickner 32 Hemlock Road, Livingston, NJ 07039 on Tuesday, March 12th beginning at 1:00pm.
