Carl Israel Lawrence Brenner was born on August 24, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York. He was raised alongside his siblings, Irene, Norman, and Zelda. At just 16 years old, Carl met Audrey Weinberg, then 14, beginning a loving partnership that would span 68 devoted years of marriage.
After graduating from high school, Carl attended SUNY Oswego , where he earned his degree in education followed by a master’s in education from the City College of New York. He went on to become an industrial arts teacher in the New York City school system and ultimately served as the Industrial Arts Supervisor for New York City. Carl and Audrey built a warm and lively home together, raising their four children—Robert, Michael, Joel, and Denise.
Beyond his professional life, Carl was a man of many talents. He possessed a remarkable ability to repair clocks of all kinds, from delicate pocket watches to towering bell clocks. A gifted artisan, he could transform a simple piece of wood into a work of beauty. He also had a deep passion for restoring antiques and antique cars, bringing them back to life with care and precision. He also enjoyed the outdoors and nature going on camping trips and spending hours at a time working in the garden.
During the summer months, Carl dedicated himself to working with children and giving back to the community. He combined these passions through his involvement with the American Jewish Society for Service, a nonprofit organization that brought Jewish teens to underserved communities across the country. Carl and Audrey spent many summers in remote areas, often accompanied by their children, contributing their time and energy to meaningful service.
Carl is survived by his beloved wife, Audrey; his four children; fourteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren: and his sister Zelda Ostrow. His legacy is one of devotion—to his family, his craft, his students, and his community—and he will be deeply missed.
