

Born on March 31, 1938, in New York, NY, Emil was the son of the late Matthias and Clara Koref and the beloved brother of the late Ellen Rau.
A graduate of McBurney School, Emil continued his education at Long Island AG & Tech. He dedicated over 40 years of his career to Micro Bio Medics while also serving as a proud volunteer firefighter for the New Providence Fire Department for 58 years. Rising through the ranks from firefighter to Captain, Deputy Chief, and ultimately Fire Chief, Emil’s commitment to his community was unwavering. In his later years, he continued to serve as the department’s treasurer.
Emil is survived by his devoted wife, Sonya Koref, and his three sons: Brian (Emmie), Scott, and Craig (Alissa). He was a loving grandfather to Brianna, Tyler, and Jessica, as well as his step-granddaughter, Brittney. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren, Mina and Aylin, along with his step-great-granddaughter, McKenna.
The family will be receiving guests for Emil on Thursday, March 6, 2025 from 10:15 AM to 10:45 AM at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, New Jersey 07039, followed by funeral service at 11:00 AM. Burial will be Thursday, March 6, 2025 at 1:30 PM at Beth David Cemetery, 300 Elmont Road, Elmont, New York 11003.
Emil’s dedication to family, service, and community will always be remembered and cherished.
