It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Marjorie Kent Millman, who died peacefully at home on Saturday, October 19th at the age of 81, surrounded by her husband and three children. She leaves behind Michael, her husband of 58 years, along with sons Mark, Matthew, and Martin. Marjorie is also survived by her daughters-in-law Tara (Marty) and Kimberly (Matthew), grandchildren Sebastian, Travis, Shoshanna, and Charlotte, who will carry her memory in their hearts. She was preceded in death by her brother Colonel Richard S. Kent.
Born to David and Josephine Kent in Manhattan Beach, NY on May 13th, 1943, Marjie—as she was known to her friends—lived many lives through her various careers and interests.
Upon her graduation from Columbia University, Marjie pursued a career as a physical therapist. After marrying Michael in 1966 and starting a family in Manhattan, the Millmans moved to the suburbs of New Jersey to expand the family to five. In the community Marjie was active with the charitable arm of the Millburn School Board, chairing the Charles T. King Student Loan Fund Dinner over multiple years. When all of her children left the house Marjie attended Rutgers Law School at age 50 and embarked on a new career with her employment-law practice.
Personally, Marjie spent her entire lifetime painting, creating jewelry, and as a patron of the arts. She loved playing with tiles and cards, maintaining a weekly game of Mah-Johg and later Bridge. She was an avid reader and New York Times Crossword solver. She spent many years going into the city with her girlfriends making sure to never miss a Broadway show. Marjie was the queen of the one-pot meal, using Michael’s tomatoes and other vegetables that he grew in the garden as the base for many of her soups, stews, sauces, and chilis. Later in life Marjie and Michael made her dreams of traveling the world come true by visiting Russia, China, Japan, Uganda (to see the gorillas), Peru, the Galápagos Islands, Australia, and, in celebration of her 80th birthday, Iceland.
Marjie lived a long full life doing all the things she loved, surrounded by those she loved.
We welcome friends and family to join us in celebrating Marjie. A funeral service will be held at 1pm on Monday, October 21, 2024 at the Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, NJ 07039. The family will be receiving friends between 12:15PM and 12:45PM. A catered reception will follow the funeral services from 2-4PM.
