Morton Stanley Weinstein was born in Newark, New Jersey to Max and Dorothy (née Bernhaut) Weinstein. He was a loving family man, loyal friend and respected dentist who enjoyed a long life with his wife Joyce in Mountainside, NJ proudly involved in his community and in the lives of his three children and seven grandchildren.
He grew up attending the Maple Avenue School and then the Weequahic High School graduating in 1949 where he became a central figure among a band of Weequahic brothers. A lifelong fraternity, they befriended each other in elementary school on the neighborhood basketball courts and since remained close in sharing their celebrations and losses well past their 65th High School reunion.
Mort went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania where he was a fraternity member of Alpha Epsilon Pi and sub matriculated into Penn's School of Dentistry. After graduation, he became a Lieutenant Officer in the US Navy, stationed in the Mediterranean on the USS Monrovia.
He met his wife, Joyce, on a fated summer day in Nantucket when he was smitten with a beach blanket beauty from Brooklyn, NY. Neither revealed their true professions that day, she a dental hygienist and he a dentist having set up practice in Iselin, NJ, but soon they were married and caring for patients together. Highly dedicated to his patients and their wellbeing, he enjoyed watching generations from the community who returned with their children and their children’s children. He was well-respected by his colleagues, adored by his staff, and first to welcome new practitioners to the area resulting in some of his closest friendships.
He loved the outdoors and actively enjoyed jogging at the track, bicycle rides, skiing, and long walks at Echo Lake Park. Early summers were spent at Bradley Beach and later Long Beach Island where he could usually be spotted on a bench enjoying the sunset. He was actively engaged in the community joining B’nai B’rith leadership, the board of Jewish Family Services and co-founding The August Symphony Orchestra. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Joyce; three children, Ellen, Michael and Eric; seven grandchildren and three children-in-laws.
