Peggy was born in New York City on August 1, 1953, to Herbert and Frances Fein. She attended Ohio University and later earned a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Bank Street College in New York.
She began her teaching career at the Horace Mann School in New York and later taught at Prospect Co-Op Nursery School in Maplewood, NJ, where she dedicated over 30 years to nurturing young children and also served as director of the school’s summer camp.
Peggy married Dennis Tobin in 1977, and together they raised their two children, Michael and Amanda (Sondey), in Maplewood, NJ.
Peggy had a lifelong passion for art and creativity. She founded her own clothing design and scrapbooking businesses, channeling her artistic spirit into endeavors that brought joy to others.
In her later years, Peggy was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Rather than dwell on the challenges of her diagnosis, she chose to focus on positivity and connection. Through exercise classes, physical therapy, and support groups, she built a strong network of others affected by the disease and became an advocate for Parkinson’s research and awareness.
Above all, Peggy cherished time spent with her family—especially her grandchildren, who were her greatest joy and primary source of strength and motivation in her later years.
Peggy is survived by her husband, Rabbi Dennis Tobin; her children, Michael Tobin (Kathleen Fane) and Amanda Sondey (Joseph Sondey); and her five beloved grandchildren, Elissa, Madeline, Zachary, Alexander, and Victoria.
The family will be receiving guests from 8:15am-8:45am at the Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, NJ 07039, on February 27, 2026, followed by a funeral service at 9am. The burial will follow at Temple Israel Cemetery, 388 Saw Mill River Rd, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY 10706.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peggy’s memory to the Parkinson’s Foundation or the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
